Abstract
This practice-led research reframes the synthesis of art and science in exploration artists’ representations of the Australian coastline produced during the 1801 voyages of Baudin and Peron, and Matthew Flinders. European museum research, field research, and practice-led experiments with contemporary 3D media, utilizing technologies from art and science, are the basis of the research methods. The accompanying exhibition represents the experiences of the early exploration artists as reinterpreted by the candidate. The artwork is a tension between art and science where explorative technologies confront the contemporary artist with an alien world comparable to that experienced by the exploration artists.
