Abstract
Acknowledging Brazil – The Cinema of Joel Zito Araujo is a documentary film of one of the strongest voices on racial issues in Brazil, the much underrated black Brazilian filmmaker Joel Zito Araujo. This research/documentary examines Araujo’s cinema and academic work, growing up as a black Brazilian, and the motivations and struggles of the most prolific black documentary Brazilian filmmaker. Intertwining Araujo’s body of work and his own life experiences with past and recent alarming statistics on racism and black issues, the aim of this research is to underpin Araujo’s argument that inequality in Brazil has always been racial not social.
