Abstract
Date: January 1 (New Years Day) 2019.
Time: 4.55am-5.08am
Location: Woodford Folk Festival Hilltop Stage
Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland Australia.
This video is an audio-visual Data sonification live recording of the 2019 New Year’s Day sunrise, as viewed from the Hilltop Stage venue at Woodford Folk Festival Sunshine Coast Australia.
It was filmed using a camera mounted on a prototype solar power generator (The SCU Sunflower) that provided the festival venue with a high output portable AC Power supply.
The image is looking east from the Woodford festival Hilltop across the Glasshouse Mountains of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
The music on this video is automatically created/generated by four synthesiser sounds controlled and manipulated by the patterns of Sunlight present that morning.
The music is created using open source music and data networking software. (Raspian Code, MAX MSP/MAX 4 Live, Ableton).
This software continuously measures,
the amount of sunlight striking the solar panels of
the Sunflower solar power generator.
Changes to these recorded measurements automatically
cause the melodies of the music to change.
This process is known as “data sonification”
In summary, the music composition is created by the sunlight.
