Abstract
• Original ontology of chiropractic was adapted from the ancient Greeks • Included metaphysical (vitalistic) and physical (materialistic) aspects • Posited that the universe is comprised of intelligence and matter • Intelligence acts on matter to create the world we perceive • In living beings, impulses sent over the nervous system carry this intelligent life force to all tissues, organs and systems and maintains them in a state of tone • In Greek, tonos meant balance or proportion • Physiologically, tone meant that organs have the correct amount of functional energy to precisely perform their contribution to body function and health at any particular time • Too much or too little such energy can cause abnormal physiology and disease FroM oNtoLoGY to praCtiCE WiSDoM project will interview chiropractic thought-leaders and survey practitioners, investigating whether and how vitalistic thinking and practices might contribute to a chiropractic phronesis that could add value to chiropractic services.
