Abstract
Vanuatu is a developing small island state located in the Southwest Pacific Ocean, 1770 km (1100 mi) east of Australia. It comprises of 82 volcanic islands and has a total land area of 12,190 km2 (4707 mi2). Its population of 300,000 is concentrated on 16 islands, with over 80% of Ni-Vanuatu (people of Vanuatu) living in rural areas (Fig. 1). Vanuatu gained political independence in 1980. The national languages are Bislama, English, and French.
