Abstract
In the first study of its kind, a randomized controlled trial published in the BMJ demonstrated that parachute use did not significantly reduce death or major trauma in people jumping from an aircraft.1 Fortunately for the participants, the research was limited to an aircraft that was parked stationary on the ground, and hence the findings are not generalizable to people jumping from an aircraft in flight. The study satirically highlights the potential limitations of research and the problems that could occur with research translation when such limitations are not clearly presented.
