Abstract
This study examines the contribution of traditional practices of ethnic people to current forestry management in Central Vietnam. It reveals that traditional forest management systems have been replaced by legalized management systems implemented by the government. Some traditional collection methods and uses of forest products are practised still, but these make little positive contribution to contemporary forest management. Ethnic parents undervalue the importance of teaching and transmitting traditional knowledge, while their children exhibit reluctance to learn of it. These findings suggest an unpromising future for maintenance and extension of traditional forest practices of the ethnic peoples of Central Vietnam.
