Abstract
Organisations operate in a climate of constant changes in economic, social, and environmental conditions. Within this climate, organisations are challenged to continually evolve, becoming more cost-effective and efficient while, at the same time, address increasing societal expectations. Societal expectation includes the safety and welfare of the public and team members alike. In this context, there is the possibility of tension between safety and becoming more cost-effective and efficient. Individuals pay the human cost of workplace incidents and accidents. The human cost includes temporary physical and psychological disabling injuries, permanently disabling injuries or indeed death. Within Australia, organisations are responsible first for preventing workplace accidents and injuries and then to compensate injured team members.
