The public perception on NGO's roles in the Bunaken National Park, North Sulawesi, Indonesia : case study of RARE's community empowerment programme

This thesis examined the effectiveness of the environmental management NGO, RARE, in engaging the community in the management of Bunaken National Park, Sulawesi, Indonesia. The case study collected interview data from communities and officials, and demonstrated that the public perception on RARE’s program process has led to the communities recognition to their own expectations and the government agenda. It was concluded that public perceptions impacted significantly on the success of the program. In the light of findings, a conceptual model of program process was modified to account for processes required for the NGO’s program to be more effective in the future.
