Abstract
Contributing to global efforts to support declining coral reefs, this research focuses on aspects of coral larval ecology to inform refinement of coral reef restoration through enhanced larval supply. In an important reef restoration species, the optimal larval supply density for subsequent coral growth and recruitment was determined. Strong settlement peaks were found when competent larvae were released during midday periods compared to other times. Application of this research will improve targeting of larval provision to degraded coral reefs, at densities and diel periods that should optimise settlement while also substantially reducing the time required for field operations.
