Abstract
The growth of and adoption of postmodern ideas within the general community, particularly during the latter half of the Twentieth Century, posed significant challenges to traditional beliefs and customs, In relation to Anglo-American cultures, these challenges expressed themselves through increasing pressure for social equality at ethnic, class and sexual levels. Postmodernism thus encouraged such projects as Civil Rights Movements and Feminism while at the same time negating the philosophical basis for the existence of such movements through its denial of universal standards and its consequent undermining of traditional theories of Western Philosophy in regard to perspectives on reason and rationality, reality and truth.
The most contentious theoretical issue at the close of the Twentieth Century involved the degree to which postmodernism had rendered philosophy, in its traditional form, inoperable, and the potential consequence this entailed for both philosophy itself and perspectives such as feminism.
By tracing the general pattern of theories which led to the emergence of postmodernism, and concentrating on the effects on philosophy and feminism for which, according to contemporary theorists, postmodernism bears responsibility, this work attempts to uncover the nature of the relationship between feminism and philosophy, and to reveal the effects on feminism of contemporary philosophical responses to postmodernism. Part of this process involves formulating a way forward for philosophy and feminism, and providing the basis for a workable theory of ethical equality which may be further developed by political, legal and educational philosophers.
