Abstract
Eucalyptus cloeziana F. Muell or Gympie Messmate, is considered an important species for hardwood plantations in Queensland. It's naturally wide and disjunct distribution over a range of climatic and ecological conditions in Queensland suggest that large genetic differentiation would be found within this species. Indeed, the high level of genetic structuring in E. cloeziana found in this study was higher than that found in other eucalypt subspecies and species complexes. Clustering of microsatellite genetic variation of E. cloeziana populations was strongly correlated to three geographic regions, North Queensland (NQ), Southern Inland (SI) and Southern Coastal (SC), with narrow zones connecting regions NQ to SI and SI to SC. Variation within E. cloeziana in the JLA chloroplast DNA region was similar to that found in microsatellites and that previously described with morphology and isozymes. In consideration of the congruency between these datasets, E. cloeziana should be redescribed as at least three subspecies so as to be more consistent with the classification of other eucalypts at lower taxonomic levels.
Natural inter-subgeneric hybridisation between E. cloeziana and E. acmenoides at Neerdie in Southeast Queensland was verified in this study. The limitation of the adult hybrids examined to formation F1 individuals and the predominantly unidirectional hybridisation in favour of E. acmenoides as the maternal parent, suggest that hybridisation is very recent and therefore unlikely to have impacted on the structuring of genetic diversity found within E. cloeziana.
The implication of the findings in this study to the domestication of E. cloeziana is also discussed.
