Abstract
The overarching aim of the thesis has been to investigate the ways in which a feature of intangible cultural heritage, language, can be made into material form as a visitor attraction through the process of monumentalisation. A phenomenological, hermeneutic methodological approach was taken to observe visitors as they interacted with the Monument, detailing their activities, reactions and performances. Visitors’ interpretations of the ATM occurred as an outcome of an interactive process which includes their corporeal and sensorial encounters with the Monument coupled with their intellectual or cognitive perceptions or understandings. Visitors were observed and also interviewed about their experiences, impressions and perceptions of the Monument in order to gain insights into the meanings they attributed to the attraction and their encounter with it.
