Abstract
The aims of the research presented in this thesis were to determine the relationships between the muscle strength ratios of the agonists and antagonists at the knee and ankle joints, and the measurements of postural control, and how these relationships were influenced by ageing and specific exercise programs. The outcomes of the research suggested that ageing differentially affected the two strength ratios of the lower limb and had a significant negative effect on postural control. Tai Chi exercise had a benefit on muscular strength of the thigh muscles however no effect on strength ratios or static postural control.
