Abstract
Dive tourism is often cited for its capacity to conserve coral reefs by providing finance and livelihoods. Its contributions however, are poorly understood. Dive operators in the tropics were surveyed on their contributions to sustainable integrated coastal management. Key stakeholder interviews were then used in a community based dive tourism site. Results show that while most dive operators minimise diver damage, they contribute little to other eight factors required to conserve. A small group recognise traditional tenure and contribute to livelihoods, with success decreasing destructive fishing. Community based dive tourism contributed to all factors, decreasing fishing effort and destructive fishing.
