Abstract
The higher education system in Vietnam is developing rapidly. As it does, the need to boost the system’s research capacity is an increasingly important priority. To this end, the system requires a strong research culture, underpinned by a vibrant network of disciplinary cultures. This investigation addressed the state of disciplinary cultures at several leading research-oriented universities in Vietnam. These cultures were found to exist and to be valued, but they are fragile and require a willingness to invest in their further development. At present, there is perhaps too much focus on the development of research products capable of being commercialised.
