This paper presents a case study analysis of a sustainable tourism planning process that was undertaken during 2010 to develop a ten–year strategic tourism management plan for the City of Broken Hill, Australia. The plan determined eleven key directions and associated strategies to guide the sustainable management, development and marketing of tourism for the destination region that integrated with regional development objectives. These directions and associated strategies are examined to establish a set of factors to achieve regional destination competiveness. The paper concludes by identifying implications of this research that may inform planning processes for other remote and regional destinations.
