Abstract
In November 2022, OpenAl introduced ChatGPT and immediately caused a stir among academics. However, there has been a considerable amount of concern among educators about its potential misuse among students. Our research analyzes ChatGPT's performance in the context of finance assessment questions. We explore the effectiveness of ChatGPT across various question types, formats, financial topics, and levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. ChatGPT can correctly answer 58.5% of questions from a Principles of Finance test bank. Furthermore, ChatGPT performed the best with general knowledge, conceptual, and dichotomous questions (1e, True/False). On the other hand, ChatGPT struggles with quantitative problems and questions classified as application and analysis in Bloom's Taxonomy. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings for financial educators.
