Abstract
Background: A major issue in undergraduate nursing education programs is bridging the theory to practice gap, particularly in the essential elements of practical training that occurs in Work Integrated Learning. Innovative models of Work Integrated Learning are also required to improve student and clinical facilitator experiences and outcomes. The use of mobile technology in undergraduate nursing programs has been found to facilitate timely access to appropriate information and improved communication processes, whilst leading to improvements in student motivation, engagement and critical thinking, and autonomous learning in the classroom.
Aim: The aim of this research is to evaluate the use of mobile technology to support an innovative Work Integrated Learning model in an undergraduate nursing degree in Australia.
Methods: This is a four-phase study using qualitative and quantitative multi-methods underpinned by
constructivism. In this PhD research, constructivism is utilised, which emphasises interactive, learner-centred methods, fostering collaboration and critical thinking. This research also aligns with heutagogy, a self-determined learning theory for autonomous adult learners, and Situated Learning Theory, which underpins authentic experiences in work-integrated learning using mobile technology.
Discussion: It is anticipated that the results of this study will offer insight into how mobile technology may support Work Integrated Learning in an undergraduate nursing program. This will inform future decisions around curriculum design in undergraduate nursing education. This information is important to bridge existing gaps between theory and practice, and improve student and clinical facilitator experiences to optimise successful student outcomes.
