Abstract
EAP teachers in university direct-entry programs are both language and genre specialists; (Murray, 2018; Roche, 2017) and, they are often the first point of contact for international students experiencing isolation and other psychological challenges (Kahu & Nelson, 2018; Ding & Bruce, 2017; Wilson, 2017). The rewarding but challenging role played by EAP teachers can prove transformative in the lives of their students, but there is little research into how they see or experience their professional roles as educators. Understanding this has never been more important. Since March 2020 many EAP direct-entry teachers in Australia have found themselves teaching online for the first time. Understanding how this cohort has managed to remain motivated and develop professionally while navigating these challenging times could be key to designing future professional development programs and to ensuring a sustainable future for them in ELICOS post-COVID-19.
