Abstract
With the internet’s growing use for commerce, health, communication, service provision, and social interaction, older adults' participation in the internet is becoming evermore important. To examine older Australians' adoption, use, and uptake of information communication technologies (ICT), literature surrounding technology use and acceptance among older people was explored with direct reference to the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT and UTAUT2). Based on a review of the pertinent literature, a research model was developed centered on constructs identified within the literature as important factors influencing technology use. A positivist, quantitative approach was used for the research. Data were collected via a paper-based survey distributed to 17 retirement villages along the east coast of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland (QLD), Australia, with 255 usable surveys returned, yielding a response rate of 31%.
Multivariate statistical data assumptions and hierarchical regression model testing were conducted to examine the relationships among variable blocks representing attitudes toward computers and to ascertain the variance explained in the frequency of ICT use. The results of the data analysis revealed that internal factors, such as learning, self-efficacy, knowledge, habit, and anxiety, were more significant in predicting the frequency of ICT use than external factors, such as social influence, risks online, and price. The results also revealed that, when attempting to increase the frequency of ICT use among people over 65, attention needs to be given to the following internal factors: benefits provided by information technology, the ease of use of information technology, the support provided to successfully use information technology, building confidence in using computers and the internet, and techniques to overcome the fear of using computers.
