Abstract
This presentation will explore an autoethnographic study of my personal perceptions and experiences of coaching netball at school, club, representative, and state level in both New Zealand and Australia. Drawing upon my extensive experience of coaching netball in both countries, this presentation examines and compares player development, team culture, engagement, mental capacity, and overall success, through the adoption and implementation of a Games Based Approach (GBA) to coaching.
Qualitative data was gathered in the form of participant observations, conversational engagement, and journal entry reflections, recorded over three competition seasons (2021- 2023), spanning school, club, representative and state level netball teams. An open-coding approach was employed to group data in to initial themes, followed by Axial coding to help identify the main key themes.
Results highlighted significant differences between the two countries regarding their preferred coaching style (direct vs GBA), their approach to creating and maintaining a positive team culture, the meaning of winning and what this looks like, and a difference in players’ mental strength and competitive attitudes.
While continuing to coach netball in the Australian context, these findings provide ongoing challenges regarding my own personal coaching philosophy and preferred style, along with my beliefs in establishing a positive team culture and the meaning of winning.
