Abstract
There are a large number of adults with type 2 diabetes in Vietnam. Diabetes knowledge was found as a factor influencing how adults with type 2 diabetes take care themselves. This study aimed to describe diabetes knowledge level and associated factors among adults with type 2 diabetes in Vietnam.
A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 198 adults with type 2 diabetes in Cho Ray hospital, Vietnam. A MDRTC diabetes knowledge test developed by the Michigan Diabetes Research Training Centre was used for data collection. Data were collected by interviews and descriptive analysis, independent t test, ANOVA and regression analysis were used for the data analyses.
Adults with type 2 diabetes in the study population demonstrated a limited level of diabetes knowledge (Mean=6.3, SD=2.1). There were no associations between gender, insulin use, attendance to diabetic patients’ clubs, income and medical insurance possession with diabetes knowledge (p>0.05). Age (β=-0.04, p<0.05), education levels (F=3.5, p<0.01), duration with diabetes (β=0.06, p<0.05) were demonstrated to influence diabetes knowledge among Vietnamese adults with type 2 diabetes in the study population
Healthcare professionals in Vietnam should consider the patients’ age, education levels and duration with diabetes when providing health education for Vietnamese adults with type 2 diabetes.
