Electronic sports (esports) involve individuals or teams of players competing in video game competitions through human-computer interaction. The primary aim of my PhD is to understand the factors that underlie expertise in esports performance. The first question to answer is what makes professional esports players so skilled? Study 1 investigates the performance indicators of skilled esports players. The next question to be answered is how do they become so skilled? Study 2 details the developmental activities of skilled esports players. Study 3 combines the findings of Study 1 and Study 2 to develop a training program of skilful guidelines to develop expertise for unskilled players. Lastly, how can the knowledge derived from this framework help develop expertise in other domains that require human-computer interaction. Collectively, we aim to further understand the sport science and skill acquisition behind esports performance at the highest level of competition.
