Abstract
Across the globe, English language educators have honed their online teaching skills since 2020. Many teachers’ first experiences of online teaching began during COVID-19 when educational institutions globally suspended in-person teaching, and teachers experimented with digital tools and video-conferencing software to meet the demands of their specific contexts. Almost four years on, language teachers have emerged into a post-Covid world with enhanced digital literacies, and the education virtualisation process that started long before the pandemic has accelerated (Li &; Yu, 2023; Zamora-Antuñano et al., 2021). New opportunities have arisen to teach English for specific purposes (ESP) programs to students located offshore and online, and language teachers appear to have greater confidence in taking advantage of these opportunities (Moorhouse et al., 2022). However, the voices of language teachers are largely absent from this discussion. What they think about online teaching, the development of their digital literacies, and their readiness to meet new technological advances is unclear. In this presentation, the first stage of a project to investigate Australian-based English for specific purposes (ESP) teachers’ experiences of their roles teaching into an online ESP program to Chinese university students in 2023 are explored using an interpretive phenomenological methodology.
