Abstract
Background/Purpose: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping healthcare delivery by automating tasks, enhancing diagnostic precision, and enabling predictive analytics. However, healthcare professionals often feel underprepared to engage with AI due to limited AI-related educational content. This scoping review aimed to identify key AI literacy concepts in healthcare and map these concepts to Bloom’s Taxonomy and Ng et al.’s AILiteracy Model (BTAILM)
Methods: Following Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines, six databases were systematically searched from 2013 to 2024. Eligibility criteria included quantitative, qualitative, and review studies explicitly addressing AI literacy in healthcare. Two reviewers independently assessed articles for inclusion, with discrepancies resolved through discussion or by a third reviewer. Data were extracted and thematically synthesised to identify core AILiteracy concepts, which were then mapped against BTAILM.
Results: Of 298 articles initially identified, nine met the inclusion criteria. Four main AI literacy concepts emerged: Ethical, Technical, Terminology, and Professional. Ethical literacy was the most frequently addressed and included considerations of privacy, governance, and patient safety. Technical and Terminology concepts underscored the need for foundational knowledge of AI systems and language, while Professional literacy emphasised communication, collaboration, and the socio-cultural impact of AI on clinical practice.
Conclusion: By mapping these four concepts to BTAILM, this review demonstrates how healthcare professionals can progress from foundational AI knowledge to more advanced competencies. Incorporating these concepts into health curricula is essential for building an AI-literate workforce equipped to deploy AI tools safely and effectively in diverse clinical settings.
