The in vivo response of a ceramic-polylactide composite in bilateral ovine cancellous defects in the long bones and corresponding real time and accelerated in vitro degradation were investigated. The molecular weight of the in vivo and in vitro samples was analyzed using gel permeation chromatography. Computed tomography, faxitron radiographs and histology confirmed the critical nature of the model and well healed defects when filled with autograft. Extrapolation of the accelerated data into an in vivo time frame resulted in an estimated compressive strength of 20 MPa and molecular weight of 68,000 at the critical 6 month timepoint.
