The design of learning environments is influenced by context, including cultural, social, physical, and pedagogical factors. There is also a known functional interaction between the learning environment and teaching practice and the learning experience. This chapter proposes a framework, or method, for translating these factors and interactions into design principles. This approach includes the contextual identification and interpretation of three elements as a basis for planning the design and use of a learning environment: teaching practices, learner experience, and the cultural and physical environment. A case study is also presented of this framework being applied in a non-Western cultural context.
