Abstract
This chapter examines the notion of friendship through analysis of the lived experience of female delegates attending academic tourism, hospitality, and events conferences, informed by the concepts of friendship; sociability; conference attendance; and gender in the academy. A duo-ethnographic approach was used to explore the experiences of female academics attending association conferences, and the findings revealed a range of significant components of friendship in the experience of the women, including the importance of collegiality, support and mentorship. In particular the findings highlight the importance of female networking, friendships and associated behaviour of the women when attending the formal conference, via the social programme and regarding the away-from-home living arrangements. The chapter concludes that sociability and developing and maintaining friendships for women should be given consideration by organizers in the planning and management of conferences, particularly given the acknowledged difficulties facing women in the male dominated university sector.
