Abstract
Chapter overview The authors wish to acknowledge there is no intended criticism of our fellow midwives or doulas. As midwives, doulas, academics and researchers we do, however, have a responsibility to acknowledge that albeit potentially contentious, friend or foe, the doula-midwife partnership needs to be explored. This chapter explores the unique role a doula and a midwife play within a woman's childbearing journey and how the doula and midwife are educated to meet the needs of women, and the potential impact this can have on decision-making while providing safe and quality care. The similarities, differences, strengths and limitations between the two roles are highlighted and how, at times, this leads to tension.
