Abstract
This research-based chapter aims to communicate the evidence base for emotional intelligence capabilities and other key related skills to form effective therapeutic relationships. The research approach used in this chapter is secondary data analysis that asks pre-existing research data a new question. In this case, we highlight how emotional awareness of others, empathy, and being a positive influence are highly valued by service users with unmet mental health needs. Importantly, we also show that advanced practice is enabled where these emotional intelligence (EI) capabilities are used in combination with technical expertise and knowledge. This chapter adopts a strong focus towards the impacts of psychological trauma on mental well-being, and how EI-informed therapeutic relationships build the platform for ongoing helpful mental health interventions.
