Abstract

Common Worlds Learning settings Risk taking Socioecological Curriculum and Pedagogy Theory and Development Environmental Sociology Environmental Education and Awareness
Children and young people flourish when opportunities are provided for scaffolded risk-taking in learning settings. However an overly cautious risk-averse attitude to learning has emerged in many schools, one that ironically presents a significant risk to the learning process itself. A fundamental misalignment seems to be developing between the risks schools are trying to ameliorate, and other real risks many students encounter in their wilder lived reality. In this chapter we explore the idea that current curricular demands can be met in deeper and more powerful ways by engaging with the principles of socioecological learning, including creating a deliberate space for students to practice autonomy and managing their own risk-taking rather than trying to avoid it altogether.
