Abstract
As an activist for children's right to read, the author's playful practice draws on palimpsests from picture books to advocate high-quality children's literature and to “engage imaginatively and critically with literature and appreciate its aesthetic qualities.” The draw on Dewey's perspectives of aesthetics shared in Art as experience and make use of readers theatre to show rather than tell the exemplification of departing radically in academic writing's aesthetic qualities. There are four key voices in this script: the structuring voice is the children's picture book, The most magnificent thing by Ashley Spires; the narrator's voice draws on Spires' text and offers ideological orientation and commentary; her voice (Mellie) is heard as a doctoral student trying to find the best approach to writing a thesis on reading enjoyment; and, finally there is John Dewey who provides the theoretical insight and philosophical meaning-making. Direct quotes are shown in bold.
