Abstract
Teaching can mean taking students on transformational and often confronting learning journeys and is thus a demanding profession. The challenges can drain educators' goodwill and vitality. As one colleague said, 'I don't have time to connect, let alone be kind. All I do is shuffle students through content and hope for the best.' In these times, it is vital that the educator has a solid self-knowledge and system of care to help them maintain their wellbeing and resilience. This chapter contains five case studies in which educators share stories of how they maintain their composure, resilience, passion and empathy for teaching and their students in light of institutional pressures, negative student evaluations, and a host of other challenges. In each case study, the author shares strategies that assisted them in to maintain kindness and an ethic of care for themselves and their students in their daily work.
