Abstract
The chapter explores how immersive arts and media can entangle, layer and modulate our experiences and sensations of time. We explore how the surfaces of immersive artworks and media spaces can evoke and carry affects that are dynamic and polytemporal, with the potential to hold and project, contain and inscribe nuanced social, cultural and political feelings. We selected and circulated images from our archives of artistic projects that speak to the surfacing of time and sensation, provoking each other’s personal, creative and intuitive responses. Our replies were a string of phrases, concepts, references and fragmentary associations, acting as ‘particle-signs’ or ‘passwords’ that gestured towards intuitive relational elements carried by/with the images. We also begin to explore how each image-inary exchange has the potential to create an experimental arts educational methodology. Through this collaborative work we show how immersive experimentation and the unknown can deliver unthought eventualities, and therefore modulate the sensation of time in novel ways. We hope to be rebellious by showing that the creative act of expression opens up relational dialogue, just as the creative act of perception produces the image and its reception in a single gesture. We suggest that these acts do not simply occur ‘in the moment’, but ripple across multiple surfaces and temporalities in ways that are ecological, atmospheric and, under certain conditions, pedagogical.
