Abstract
As occupational therapy continues to evolve, challenging the taken for granted assumptions around occupation is being called for through the concept of the dark side of occupation. Pertinent “problematised” engagements like substance use are on the rise globally and they continue to complicate in the face of limited understanding from an occupational perspective. In this chapter, we use occupational experiences of young adults in Zimbabwe engaging in substance use, and living with HIV, to provide insight into the occupational nature of substance use; conceptualising recovery from substance use disorders as an occupational transition impacted by the environment and occupational choices people have. Implications for practice and ethical dilemmas likely to be faced are also discussed.
