Abstract
According to the 2020 World Drug Report ( United Nations (UN) 2020 ) it is estimated that 35.6 million people worldwide use drugs to an extent that requires treatment; yet, only one in eight suffering from drug disorders received treatment. Occupational therapists in all fields of practice are likely to meet service users who have challenges with substance use. This chapter is a starting point for occupational therapists who focus on or encounter people with substance use disorders (SUDs) during their practice. It focuses on the nature and extent of substance use, offering an occupational perspective to some of the reasons why people use substances and the challenges that individuals may experience as a consequence. The occupational therapy process is also outlined, with the role of the therapist highlighted. Clinical and recovery-oriented approaches in occupational therapy are described.
