Abstract
In this chapter, we explore STEM education in the elementary and middle grades, with reference to the inclusion of other disciplines (STEAM) where appropriate. With the rapid emergence and expansion of STEM in global and local communities, we need to provide all students with the multidisciplinary knowledge, practices, and thinking skills to maximize their learning in a new era. In addressing this educational challenge, we explore research that defines STE(A)M education for today’s world and subsequently present our perspectives. We then consider STEM linkages in terms of STEM practices, specifically modelling, and different ways of thinking. Brief reviews of STEM and artificial intelligence, and STEM and entrepreneurship, follow. Lastly, the challenges teachers face in implementing integrated STEM education are addressed, with suggestions of how to facilitate teacher appraisals of their STEM knowledge and pedagogical needs. We conclude with some recommendations for future developments in the field.
