Abstract
Sustainability has been a key topic in tourism studies for many years and is of significant importance in relation to events. However, the way that sustainability is conceptualized in the field of event management has tended to lack criticality, relying on arguably artificial divisions between the three silos of the triple bottom line (economic, social and environmental sustainability). This chapter argues that a longer-term, more holistic perspective is needed, and advocates for a move away from trying to measure the triple bottom line and towards encouraging events to contribute positively to the sustainable development of the communities, which host them. This will, as a result, enhance the wellbeing of these communities. The chapter proposes the use of three main dimensions - liveability, viability and equity - which, when taken together, contribute to ongoing sustainable development and community wellbeing.
