Abstract
The Australian agriculture sector, along with government and private sectors, is increasingly funding collaborative projects that address complex problems arising in environments subject to dynamic interactive change, or turbulence. A particular issue centers around governance that promotes project sustainability, ensuring continuing project operation and impact after funding ends. While a complexity perspective, rather than a conventional linear perspective, seems to point to collaborative governance as a way forward, little is known about the characteristics of the relationship networks that underpin project sustainability in collaborative projects. Furthermore, linear methodologies do not capture the complexities of these relationships. This chapter examines the proposition that, if project sustainability is the intention, then the relationship networks that underpin the collaboration should drive agency within the project. Specifically, the chapter examines exchange relations in networks underpinning the project sustainability of three embedded projects in the Australian agricultural sector and the potential contribution of findings to studies to improved governance in complex environments.
