Abstract

Family education is an area of global concern. Parents’ approaches to their preschoolers’ learning are of utmost importance given that parents are children’s first, and most important educators. Given this significant role that families play in children’s lives this research investigated parents’ understanding of family education, and the content of family education. This followed the historic signing of the Family Education Promotion Law of the People’s Republic of China and promulgated by President and Chairman of the Military Commission Xi Jinping which came into force on January 1, 2022. Focusing on parents’ perspectives of preschool children’s learning in Chengdu, western China, this chapter reports on a study involving questionnaires and interviews of parents. The research found that while most parents were willing to pay for their child’s education they were influenced by traditional Chinese ideas and may use improper education methods at home. Recommendations are that the pedagogical approaches parents use at home could be improved and this can be achieved with more parent education as parents are not familiar with how children learn and develop; mothers undertake too many family education tasks, and fathers should contribute more to children’s education at home. In this regard, the research suggests changes to the traditional concept of preschool children’s family education with both parents participating in family education with attention being given to quality family education strengthening home co-education and gives parents effective guidance to improve the current situation.
