Abstract

This chapter draws on empirical case studies to explain how a proposed "Creative Participation Pedagogical Approach" to media arts education engages adolescent students in media production and media analysis. The Creative Participation Pedagogical Approach invites students to generate meaning, share media making practices, and connect with peers through mentorship. The approach encourages students to draw on their everyday and lived media experiences in the classroom. Specifically, two case studies of Australian middle school classrooms, with students aged approximately 10-13 years, are presented to illustrate how aspects of the creative participation approach can be used by classroom teachers and how students engage with this pedagogical approach when provided opportunities to do so. In the two case studies, students worked on a range of projects, including short animations, games, and eBooks. Across these case studies, students mentored each other, worked with and alongside each other, and enacted shared practices as they engaged with media production and analysis, showing how the creative participation approach can be used in classrooms.
