Abstract
“Is it any wonder that no truly respectable society has ever trusted its artists?” Le Guin (2017 [1969], xiv, xv)
Writers have always been engaged in writing other lives, other ways of being or trying to get into the heads and bodies of those unlike ourselves, while recognizing that mistranslations are possible, even likely. But with research, with seeking out experiences and listening to others talk about their lives, we can hope to imaginatively capture what it means to be a particular kind of body. Careful diffractions of being with and ever-deepening empathy for can bring us increasingly closer to other animals’ experiences (Bayes 2022).
