Abstract
Library assessment is the study of the effect of a library’s services or initiatives on an individual or community. The purpose of undertaking library assessment activities is often tied to demonstrating value for money by strategically aligning a library’s services and activities to its funding agencies. Assessment activities draw on a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods, going beyond the use of statistics that alone cannot determine the impact and value of the library. This entry traces the history of library assessment and discusses commonly used frameworks and methodologies for demonstrating value and impact.
