Abstract
This chapter is derived from my doctoral investigations that investigates issues that affect Aboriginal People living in the small rural town of Casino, NSW. Located on Bundjalung Country, the investigation work involves three original exegesis components of exploration. The first component crafted a mini-documentary, ‘On Common Ground’, that was based upon yarning with members of the Casino community at a grassroots level. Second, discussions in the documentary led to the development of five visual narrative maps based on themes that emerged from those discussions. The third component comprised a community landscape map that tied the research together using metaphors as a foundation. The basis for these three components was derived from five identified themes: colonisation, cultural identity, underlying issues, media issues, and social issues. ‘On Common Ground’ depicts seven local people sharing their lived experiences and their thoughts on the pertinent issues that affect Aboriginal People residing in Casino. All participants were identified as role models, and an analysis of their personal characteristic data was undertaken and documented. Their responses then became the foundations to inform the framing of the mapping narratives. This collective data was analysed in narrative maps by exploring the landscape within a visual dialogue, or ‘seeing what people are saying’. Each map was then interpreted and the findings were explained using variables including codes, nodes, descriptors, and symbols. Each map included a definition and an explanation to provide the research greater detail. The key results and how they relate to the project were identified using metaphors in the conclusion (community landscape) map. This explains how these issues are embedded in the land that ultimately connects everyone to living ‘On Common Ground’.
