Abstract
The contemporary music culture of the Faroe Islands shares a number of aspects with both Nordic music culture and with the international anglophone music scene. But the islands are also distinct by virtue of the micro-level of its music scene, in a remote, autonomous territory with only 54,000 residents, and by particular markers of local culture in a significant proportion of the music and music videos produced there. Use of Faroese-language lyrics is one obvious marker, as is the adaptation of traditional ballads and/or dance music in contemporary styles. A number of artists and genres have also been represented in videos that feature traditional performance practices and costumes and/or iconic Faroese landscapes. The chapter will examine videos made for performers working within Faroese folk traditions, such as Eivør Pálsdóttir, and acts working in folk-fusion and Viking Metal genres, such as Hamferð, Xperiment and Týr, along with one-off musical projects such as Elin Brimheim Heinesen's orchestrated arrangement of her father's poem “Sóleyan lýsir um fløtur” (2022).
