Abstract
As academics, we teach mentorship within the context of midwifery and its relationship to midwifery leadership and education in our undergraduate and graduate programs. Yet, we have found no midwifery‑specific textbooks related to mentorship to support our teaching or students/midwives in practice. There are texts in nursing or generic ones applied to all healthcare practitioners that are too old to be applicable in today’s healthcare environment and/or tend to focus solely on the country of the authors and/or do not includeleadership or education. As the need for such a book became more crystalised in our teaching, the concept of the book was conceived. Rather than developing a book that focuses solely on Australia (country of the editors/authors), we wanted to share with our global midwifery family and students the notion that education and leadership are fundamental aspects of mentorship. We wanted to demonstrate how effective mentorship can empower and guide the next generation of midwives to take over the midwifery baton. So, working collaboratively with some global partners (13 countries and 42 authors) and drawing on national and international research and literature within the field of midwifery, as well as creative midwifery‑specifc activities the book has transversed the journey from conception to birth.
