Abstract
Opening Thoughts: Tourism is gendered – its past, present and future (Chambers et al., 2017; Pritchard, 2017; Swain, 1995). In line with the philosophy of the Elgar Research
Agenda series, in this volume we look forward, imagining, exploring and chal- lenging the ways that gender intersects with and impacts on tourism, and how it will continue to do so. We highlight emerging research in the field, and the methods and methodologies that are – or that need to be – at the forefront of gender-aware tourism research. At the same time, it is relevant to look back, to understand the key developments in the study of gender and tourism that have led us to where we are now.
