Abstract

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is written in the shadow of the Juukan Gorge caves destruction that internationally threw the spotlight upon Australia’s fraught care of First Nations People’s heritage, in this instance, the living cultural heritage of the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (Binigura) Peoples, whether tangible or intangible. It seeks to extend philosophical statements concerning Aboriginal relationships with Country to the practical everyday acts that constitute those relationships and offer new insight into the efficacy and possibility of alternative approaches to thinking about Place. It is increasingly apparent that authentic and careful engagement with landscapes of all sorts is essential for the future wellbeing of the planet. Disengaged human actions damage the complex systems of which everyone are a part and that support all life. The ignoring of Aboriginal relational knowledge within the heritage field mirrors a larger gap in the wider academic literature.
