Abstract
Professional experience remains as pivotal to the development of preservice teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and their enactment of teaching practice. While the role of the mentor teacher and their work in supporting preservice teachers is well documented, there appears to be little research into the role of the in-school coordinator who oversees the professional experience placement. The aim of this research was to investigate the perspectives of 5 in-school coordinators about their role before, during and at the conclusion of the in-school professional experience. The participants were selected using purposive sampling and data were gathered using one-to-one 30-min phone interviews. Participants were asked questions about their role before, during and at the conclusion of the professional experience. Data were then analysed using an existing framework that included four categories to summarise the in-school coordinator role (i.e. managerial, pedagogical, pastoral and evaluative). Results indicated that the in-school coordinators had varied perspectives about their role. The findings suggested that in-school coordinators’ roles go beyond traditional managerial tasks, and those in the position would benefit from clear guidelines to promote consistency in their approaches to ensure high quality professional experiences. The research has the potential to improve preservice teacher experiences of school-based placements, with the result of producing students who are more classroom-ready.
